THE TONALIST PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS

PLEASE VIEW OUR TOUR OF THE FLORENCE GRISWOLD MUSEUM  BEFORE YOU BEGIN THIS TONALIST LESSON. THE TOUR WILL PREPARE YOU, THE ARTIST, FOR THE TASK YOU ARE ABOUT TO UNDERTAKE.

The first chapter of the Tonalist lesson consists of the reflection on the works of two prominent artists.

Willard Leroy Metcalf paintings are considered among the most beautiful Tonalist creations.

John Henry Twachtman The father of Tonalism in America.

The second chapter is a step by step painting.

A list of materials needed for this painting in oils is included.

Dr. Sullo will guide his students through a beautiful Tonalist landscape painting. This technique once experienced can be used for painting outdoors. The materials and supplies listed can be purchased online or in any art store in the U.S. The Tonalists used a limited palette, so the expense should be a modest one.
